The first is a tolerance for uncertainty. You must be able to endure extended periods of ambiguity. Some thrive in vagueness. Others seek certainty. If you would lead change, you must wean yourself of the desire to be totally sure first.
I need to clarify this so it is not interpreted as advocating hastiness or disregarding clarity. There are people who move on confidently even when things are unclear. They are the ones who then act surprised when things don’t conform to their assumptions. Surely these are not the type of change leaders we speak about here. What I refer to is the ability to refuse to be paralyzed by indecision, when you cannot be sure of everything. To be able to take tentative steps and course correct as you go on.
With uncertainty comes ambiguity and instability. There seems to be very few people who are willing to admit this both privately and publicly. The innate tendency for many of us is to quickly reduce everything to what we understand. To force
